Antique Rare Hopi Indian Art Pottery Whirling Logs Design Symbol Bowl Vase:
$648.89

Being offered is a truly rare, antique, Hopi Indian made art pottery bowl. The bowl has the whirling logs design which was used by the Native Indians before world war two. The whirling logs design was primary found on jewelry and rugs and finding pieces of pottery with this design is rare. this is the only Hopi piece I have come across and most I have seen were made by the Maricopa Indians on their pottery. The bowl might have some writing on the bottom in pencil but can also be surface scratches on the bottom. The bowl does show wearing typical of a piece this old. There is wearing to the surface and designs in places. The bowl is intact with no cracks or damage from misuse. The bowl is approx. 5 5/8" wide by 1 7/8" tall.

The earliest known swastika was seen about 10,000years ago. The intricate pattern ofjoined swastikas was found on a late paleolithic figurine of a bird, carvedfrom mammoth ivory, found in Mezine, Ukraine. The word 'swastika' derives from an Asian Indian Sanskrit word, in whichthe meaning of the swastika stands for universal welfare. "Swasti"means well-being of one and all and "ka" means symbol. The swastikais one of the most ancient of all symbols and used as a symbol for peace, lifeand good luck. In the Western world, itwas a symbol of auspiciousness and good luck until the 1930s, when it washijacked by the German Aryan party. Ifind the taking of an Indian symbol despicable, and chose not to mention theirname. The swastika motif is found insome traditional Native American art and iconography. Historically, the designhas been found in excavations of Mississippian-era sites in the Ohio andMississippi River valleys. It is alsowidely used by a number of southwestern tribes, most notably the Navajo, andplains nations such as the Dakota.

The Aryan icon is an inverted version of thetraditional American Indian symbol, which usually features the arms pointingcounterclockwise. Before the 1930s, thesymbol for the 45th Infantry Division of the United States Army was a reddiamond with a yellow swastika, a tribute to the large Native Americanpopulation in the southwestern United States. It was later replaced with athunderbird symbol.

The swastika is a Navajo symbol for good luck, alsotranslated to "whirling log." The symbol was used on state road signsin Arizona. In the late 19th and early20th centuries, the swastika symbol became established in Western cultures, especially with the Navajo culture, as a good luck or good fortune symbol, andwas used in Native healing ceremonies.

The Navajos incorporated the swastika into theirrugs, jewelry, and art. Arizona'sindigenous Pima and Maricopa people wove them into their baskets and paintedthem onto their pots. The swastika'smeaning does seem to be similar across cultures, generally denoting abundanceand prosperity and referring to the four cardinal directions.
