This sale is a stunning example of an iridescent ammonite fossil of the speciesCaloceras johnstonifrom North Somerset, UK.
The piece of limestone matrix measures 280 mm (11 inches) wide and contains a large single ammonite that measures 112 mm across, which is huge for this species, is very well preserved, and has been prepared out of the rock to reveal the shell, which displays some stunning iridescence with the colours changing depending on the angle that the fossil is viewed at with copper and red tones dominating at certain angles. The colours also change as the type of light changes. The ammonite still sits in the original limestone matrix in which it was found that has been shaped and had a flat base cut for display. The whole piece weighs 1345 grams.
Around 200 million years old (Hettangian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
