Theholy anointing oil(Hebrew: שמן משיחהshemen ha-mishchah, \"oil of anointing\") formed an integral part of the ordination of thepriesthoodand theHigh Priestas well as in the consecration of the articles of theTabernacle(Exodus 30:26) and subsequenttemples in Jerusalem. The primary purpose ofanointingwith the holy anointing oil was to cause the anointed persons or objects to becomeqodesh, or \"most holy\" (Exodus 30:29).

Originally, the oil was used exclusively for the priests and the Tabernacle articles but was later extended to include prophets and kings (I Samuel 10:1). It was forofferden to be used on an outsider (Exodus 30:33) or to be used on the body of any common persons (Ex. 30:32a) and theIsraeliteswere forofferden to duplicate any like it for themselves (Ex. 30:32b).

InMark 6:13, the disciples anoint the sick and heal them. InMark 14:3-9, Mary anoints Jesus\' feet as an act of worship. InJames 5:14, the church elders anoint the sick with oil for healing. InHebrews 1:8-9, God says to Christ as He returns triumphantly to heaven, \"Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever,\" and God anoints Jesus \"with the oil of gladness.\"
