Wedgwood Blue Jasperware Capt Matthew Flinders Australia Bicentennial Plate 1974 For Sale

This marvelous blue and whiteWedgwoodJasperware plate was created by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons in 1974 to commemorate the Australian bicentennial. It has a blue background with white bas-relief and depicts 3 masted sailing ships in full sail amongst waves and the figure ofMatthew Flindersin naval uniform standing beside. There is a beautiful wreathed leaf border around edge of plate and embossed with "Capt. Matthew Flinders, R.N., Born March 16, 1774. There is the Wedgwood impressed backstamp on the back: "Wedgwood, Made in England, HO." Measurements for this fabulous creation are: Diameter=8 inches, Depth=7/8 inch. This marvelous dish has been well cared for, gently displayed and is in excellent vintage condition, free from chips, cracks or other imperfections. It is the perfect addition to your Wedgwood collection, particularly if you like the maritime theme!
Captain Matthew Flinders was a British navigator and cartographer who lead the first inshore circumnavigation of mainland Australia. He popularized the name "Australia" in his book, Voyage to Terra Australia. He was born in Lincolnshire, England, revered in Australia, but almost unknown in his home country.
