TheByzantine Empire, also referred to as theEastern Roman EmpireorByzantium, was the continuation of theRoman Empirein its eastern provinces duringLate Antiquityand theMiddle Ages, when its capital city wasConstantinople. It survived the fragmentation andfall of the Western Roman Empirein the 5th century AD and continued to exist for an additional thousand years until thefall of Constantinopleto theOttoman Empirein 1453. During most of its existence, the empire remained the most powerful economic, cultural, and military force in Europe.

TheByzantine Empirewas the medieval Greek empire, that evolved after the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century. The terms "Byzantine Empire" and "Eastern Roman Empire" were coined after the end of the realm; its citizens continued to refer to their empire simply as theRoman Empire(Medieval Rhōmaíōn) orRomania(Medieval Greek:Ῥωμανία), and to themselves as Romans (Medieval – a term which Greeks continued to use for themselves into Ottoman times. Although the Roman state continued and its traditions were maintained, modern historians distinguish Byzantium fromits earlier incarnationbecause it was centred on Constantinople, oriented towards Greek rather than Latin culture, and characterised byEastern Orthodox Christianity.

The Byzantine Empire was famous ofLead Seals.

The Lead/Wire seal isa round lead seal product which is used in conjunction with any length of pre-cut or rolls of various wire types. Sealing pliers are required to clamp the lead seal to prevent slippage. The pliers can be used in conjunction with a customised die for a bespoke sealing solution.Lead used to be a common material for setting seal to historical documents. Lead seals formed parts of historical documents as a guarantee of their legal validity. Disinfectants are commonly used during the restoration of historical documents. The use of lead seals date back to the Roman period in which they were used to record the movement of various goods throughout the empire.
