This is an authentic 1906-dated U.S. cavalry saber, clearly marked on the ricasso “A.S. Co.” for Ames Sword Company along with the U.S. Ordnance flaming-bomb insignia and “1906” date. The opposite side carries additional U.S. inspection/acceptance markings.
The Model 1906 represents an important transitional point in American cavalry history. Its overall form continued the classic curved cavalry-saber tradition associated with the earlier Model 1860, while incorporating the distinctive steel/iron three-branch guard and furniture. The pattern had a comparatively brief service life before the U.S. Army moved toward the radically different straight-bladed Model 1913 cavalry saber associated with George S. Patton.
This example retains several particularly desirable original features. The hilt retains its original dark leather-covered grip and twisted wire wrapping, with substantial portions of both surviving. The large three-branch steel guard remains intact, and the sword retains its characteristic long curved cavalry blade.
The sword measures approximately 40 inches overall, consistent with the dimensions expected for the Model 1906 pattern.

The sword is being offered in untouched antique condition. The blade shows considerable age-related patina, oxidation and surface rust, particularly toward the point, along with scratches and wear consistent with its approximately 120 years of age. The steel hilt likewise shows oxidation and age patina. The original leather grip exhibits cracking, losses and deterioration, particularly near the lower portion, but importantly much of the original leather and twisted grip wire remain intact.
The sword has intentionally not been aggressively polished or restored. Its original surfaces, markings and age-related character have been left intact for the next collector to preserve or conserve according to their preference.
This is an impressive surviving example of the Ames Model 1906 U.S. Cavalry Saber and would make an excellent addition to a collection focused on U.S. cavalry, Ames swords, American military edged weapons, Spanish-American War/early 20th-century militaria, or the transition from the traditional mounted cavalry saber to the modern U.S. Army.
