The history of Makkum ceramic tiles is inextricably tied to Royal Tichelaar Makkum, the oldest continuously operating ceramics and clay company in the Netherlands. Located in the Frisian village of Makkum, the company has utilized local sea clay for over 450 years to produce iconic Dutch earthenware and architectural tiles.

The Delftware Influence: During the 17th and 18th centuries, the rise of \"Delft Blue\" pottery sweeping across the Netherlands heavily influenced Makkum\'s artisans.

Faience & Tin-Glazing: Rather than shifting to cheaper mass production, the Tichelaar factory specialized in a traditional seventeenth-century faience technique. Tiles were dipped in an opaque, white tin glaze and meticulously hand-painted while the glaze was still wet, fusing the pigments directly into the ceramic during firing.Every piece is hand-molded from Frisian clay and individually hand-painted using a centuries-old tin-glaze formula.

Classic Motifs: Makkum tiles became famous for depicting scenes of traditional Dutch life, featuring rural landscapes, maritime ships, coat of arms, and iconic Dutch windmills.
