The name Shanunga came from a salvaged ship's figurehead and quarterboard from the wrecked vessel Shanunga, which Captain Baxter famously mounted and displayed in his yard/garden at the cottage for decades.Capt. Baxter lived in a historic cottage at 10 Broadway in Siasconset called Shanunga.Captain William Baxter (born 1805) was one of Siasconset's most famous 19th-century local figures. He served as the unofficial postmaster for 'Sconset, famously delivering mail via horse-drawn mail wagon.

Josiah Freeman was a prominent Nantucket photographer active primarily from the late 1860s through the 1890s.
