14 Complete Newspapers January 1937 The Times Picayune (& New Orleans States) For Sale

Up for sale is a lot of fourteen (14) complete newspapers from New Orleans, Louisiana, all published during January, 1937. The lot includes 11 weekday papers (The Times Picayune) and 3 Sunday papers (The Times Picayune - New Orleans States). These papers are fascinating reading and reflect the turbulent years in which the country was still recovering from the Great Depression while World War II loomed on the horizon. Some of the major international and national news stories covered in these papers are listed below. It is interesting to see how the stories evolved over the period spanned by this collection.-The Spanish Civil War. Multiple major European nations, including Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, were directly involved in what became a prelude to World War II.-The arrival of exiled Soviet leader Leon Trotsky at Tampico, Mexico, after having been given asylum by that country. (The local police chief is quoted as to his concerns for possibly violence; Trotsky would be assassinated a few years later.)-The kidnapping and murder of 10 year old Charles Mattson of Tacoma, Washington. (This was one of the most sensational kidnappings of the 1930s, almost rivaling the Lindbergh case. The Mattson crime has never been solved.)-Chinese General Feng Yu-Hsiang\'s demands for the immediate execution of all uncured narcotics addicts. He was known as \"The Christian General\".-The \"Battle of Daytona Beach\" in which the Governor of Florida attempted to oust Mayor Irene Armstrong (the wife of political boss and former mayor Edward H. Armstrong). Mrs. Armstrong barricaded herself in the City Hall as her heavily armed police force defended her against the Florida National Guard that had been mobilized by the Governor.-The 1937 Sugar Bowl football game (held in New Orleans) which matched the Broncos of the University of Santa Clara (California) and the Tigers of Louisiana State University (LSU). Remarkably, Santa Clara won that game, and would go on to defeat LSU again in a rematch in the 1938 Sugar Bowl! In 1949, Santa Clara would win the Orange Bowl (over Florida), finishing with an overall record of 3-0 in bowl games. The school dropped football entirely after 1992.
Since these are complete newspapers, they have all of the content that you might expect including editorials, society pages, financial pages, sports news, and classified ads, etc. The three Sunday papers have multiple extras including large numbers of comic strips (both familiar and now obscure), a special section for Ripley\'s Believe It Or Not, and - very interestingly - the \"Young People\'s Paper\", which was published weekly \"for, by, and about children\".

Provenance and Preparation for Sale: These papers are from an older home in Metairie, Louisiana that was about to be gutted and rebuilt. They were actually in a huge hardbound volume that was labeled \"Times Picayune - January 1 - 21, 1937\" on the spine. This binding had fallen apart and some of the papers in this date range had either been cut out or removed. Because of the poor condition of the binding, I elected to remove the remaining 14 newspapers from it. The binding process had consisted of running five evenly spaced strong cords through all of the papers and also applying mesh and glue to the edges of the papers that met the spine. I have attempted to remove as much of the mesh and glue as possible, but there is still some remaining, which makes it difficult to separate adjacent sections of each paper, without tearing the pages. It is suggested that these newspapers be enjoyed by unfolding them and then turning the pages from right to left as if reading a book.
