1828 Edward Stanley & WJ Farrer Customs Patronage Letter Landing Waiter Refusal For Sale

1828 CUSTOMS / TREASURY PATRONAGE LETTER — SIGNED BY EDWARD STANLEY (LATER 2nd BARON STANLEY OF ALDERLEY), ADDRESSED TO W. J. FARRER, SENIOR TREASURY/CUSTOMS OFFICIAL. A strong early‑19th‑century administrative letter concerning Customs employment, including Landing Waiter, Tidewaiter and Weigher posts, with named candidates and classic Georgian patronage language.

DESCRIPTION

A well‑preserved June 16, 1828 autograph letter written and signed by Edward Stanley (1802–1869), later 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley, declining the appointment of Reynolds as a Landing Waiter in the Customs. Stanley explains that such posts were reserved for persons of “superior station & education,” reflecting the rigid class‑based structure of Customs employment in the late Georgian period.

He notes that vacancies “are very much sought after” and rarely available, but offers to place Reynolds on his list for Tidewaiter or Weigher when a vacancy occurs.

The letter includes a valuable salary reference:“The Emoluments of these places are from 60 to 70£ a Year.”

Stanley also reports that he has appointed Mr Hobson to the Post Office at Warrington, adding that he trusts the appointment will “give satisfaction to our friends at that place” — classic Whig patronage language showing active political management.

The letter is addressed to (not signed by) W. J. Farrer, a senior Treasury/Customs official whose role included processing and recording minor Crown appointments. His name appears beneath Stanley’s signature in the standard administrative layout of the period.

A near‑contemporary (1850–1869) hand has added the identification note:“[the present Lord Stanley of Alderley]” — written after Edward succeeded to the title in 1850. This is provenance‑enhancing and typical of Victorian estate archiving.
