Original 1832 handwritten stampless folded LETTER dated New York, May 16, 1832, written and signed by Moses Allen and addressed to Martin Cowles, Esq. at Farmington, Connecticut. The folded address panel retains red postal markings and manuscript postal notations.
The letter concerns a “Bond of Trust” Allen had given for the children of Dana Judson, who died at Southington. Allen asks Cowles to make inquiries and obtain a certified copy of the bond, mentioning the Judge of Probate and offering to pay any expense involved.
A handwritten note beneath Allen's letter is directed to Mr. Stephen Walkley, asking him to investigate the probate matter and determine whether the bond is in the proper office and, if found, to send a copy.

The accompanying modern research note states that Moses Allen moved to New York City in 1815, where he lived for the remainder of his life. It states that he was initially in business with his brother as “S. & M. Allen,” selling lottery tickets; later became a noted banker and one of the founders of the American Tract Society; and was ordained an elder in the “Brick church” in 1822, an office he reportedly held until his death. The note states that Moses Allen died suddenly at his New York residence on October 10, 1877, and that contemporary obituaries recorded his long life of service. It further states that Allen had lived in Albany only briefly before age thirty and was a member of a prominent New England family that helped transform the city in the decades following the War for Independence.
The exterior retains multiple postal markings, including NEW-YORK MAY 16 and BURLINGTON MAY 18 CT, along with forwarding/address notations. The sheet was folded and mailed in the customary stampless-letter manner.
