Names: Luther G. Pinkham & Ann Randell
Offered here is an original 1837 handwritten “published for marriage” document from New Durham, New Hampshire.
The manuscript certifies that Mr. Luther G. Pinkham and Miss Ann Randell, both of New Durham, had been published for marriage in said town, “as the Law directs.” The document is dated April 30, 1837 and is signed by Enoch Berry, Town Clerk.
In early New England, couples were required by law to have their intention to marry publicly announced — commonly referred to as being “published” or the publication of banns — prior to the marriage ceremony. Documents such as this served as official legal proof that the requirement had been fulfilled and were often presented to clergy or officials or retained by the family.
This example survives as a fully handwritten original manuscript, not a printed form, and is particularly appealing in its narrow strip format, typical of early 19th-century New Hampshire town papers.
