Handwritten manuscript fragments from an antique promissory note dating to 1844–1849. The documents are written in period iron gall ink on laid paper and show significant age-related toning, fold lines, and edge loss consistent with nearly 180 years of survival.
Front (Obligation Face) preserves the classic jointly and severally obligatory language naming Haskell as payee or bearer, with a principal amount referencing forty-five cents (likely part of a larger dollar figure now lost). Signed by Abra Stanley and Benjamin M. Stanley Jr., making this a two-party obligation.
Reverse (Endorsement/Payment Record) documents partial payments against the note: a July 27, 1844 original date; a reference to twenty-five dollars; receipt of ten dollars on August 23, 1849; and a further receipt notation dated September 10, 1849.
Together these fragments offer a rare glimpse into mid-19th century private lending and debt settlement in rural America. The Stanley surname was common throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic states in this period.
