Offered here is an original 1853 antique Hartford, Connecticut receipt, printed on attractive pale blue paper and measuring approximately 7 1/8 x 3.25 inches, documenting a purchase of 33½ pounds of candles totaling $4.18 from C. Benton, Soap and Candle Manufacturer, located at No. 44 Morgan Street.
The receipt is made out to Mr. Chas Taylor, providing an excellent genealogical connection and continuing a remarkable series of mid-century Taylor household candle purchases. Dated November 23, 1853, and signed by C. Benton, it reflects everyday commerce in antebellum Hartford and the important soap and candle-making trade.
The reverse is neatly docketed “C. Benton / Nov 23/53,” showing it was retained for personal bookkeeping.
Condition: light toning, minor edge wear, scattered rust spots along right margin; writing and imprint remain bold and legible.
