Offered here is an original handwritten receipt dated September 26, 1856, made out to merchant Botty H. Dobson of 29 Banks Street. This charming piece of Victorian-era commercial ephemera documents the purchase of dry goods including darning cotton, coat buttons (gross), and a piece of black silk velvet, with itemized pricing in the pre-decimal dollar notation typical of the mid-19th century. The receipt bears a "Received Payment" notation with signature and a final total of $2.42.
Written in period brown ink on lined paper, the document displays excellent legibility with light foxing consistent with its 170-year age. A wonderful artifact for collectors of antique paper ephemera, Victorian needlework history, textile trade documents, or 19th-century American commerce.
