1865 Civil War Letter Harper\'s Ferry Court Martial Drunk Lincoln Thomas Clarke: $138.25
Great original 1865 Civil War Letter written at Harper\'s Ferry, W.V. by Union soldier Thomas G. Clarke to his mother. A section of the letter reads \"I do not know if you will ever see me again or not. There were five to be shot last Friday but they were reprieved by the President (Lincoln) they are sending some from here to the dry Tortugas that is down in the Gulf of Mexico south of Florida on an island for from one to three years and some to Wheeling WV but the court martial is dismissed now on account of their being drunk and a part of these are dishonorably dismissed from the service....\" Thomas also mentions reporting to their regiments soon, and requesting his mother send him forty or fifty dollars for clothes. Letter is dated Feb. 21st, 1865 Harper\'s Ferry, WV. Written just 7 weeks before President Lincoln\'s assassination. Letter is in surprisingly excellent condition for age. Clean & bright. Paper is not musty or brittle. A couple tiny 1/8\" edge tears. Smoke-free home. A wonderful addition to your Civil War ephemera collection!
