Original handwritten Reconstruction-era letter dated December 17, 1865, written from Nashville, Tennessee, by George M. Anthony, former Sergeant Major of Company B, 35th Tennessee Infantry, and addressed to Gen. Benjamin J. Hill, former Confederate Brigadier General and commander of the 35th Tennessee Infantry. Written only months after the end of the Civil War, the letter reunites two men connected through Confederate service and provides an excellent firsthand account of Tennessee during the opening months of Reconstruction.
Anthony discusses General Hill’s recovered watch, mutual friends and former comrades, legal careers, business opportunities in Nashville and McMinnville, and everyday life following the war. Particularly noteworthy are the political comments concerning Governor William G. “Parson” Brownlow, President Andrew Johnson, Radical Republicans, and the uncertain direction of Reconstruction in Tennessee. The letter also mentions several identified individuals connected to the 35th Tennessee Infantry and the Tennessee legal community, making it an excellent research piece.
Condition is good overall with original mailing folds, light toning, and expected age-related handling wear. Handwriting remains clear and legible throughout. Please review all photographs carefully for condition and content.
