Headquartered in Martindale's Block in Indianapolis, the firm managed the Western Law and Collection Association, a massive network established in 1868 to provide collection services through vetted attorneys across the United States.
The correspondence is a receipt sent to David Goff, a prominent attorney in Beverly, West Virginia. The handwritten note confirms the arrival of $6.50 for the Law Directory, which was the precursor to the modern Martindale-Hubbell legal network.
