Envelope mailed to George G. Hanscom in Saco Maine, from Boston - has two letters inside (first) Boston, Sunday aft. December 3, 1876. Dear George, Edie is all right again, – good as new – and will go to school to-morrow in flying colors. We shall do our best to keep her well. I came home Friday night all right — I have a little cold, but that is nothing unusual for me at this season of the year. The Chaise came to hand all right and I think it will be very useful to me in getting about town and exercising my horses, in bad weather and when the ground is frozen, it will save my buggie very much. Emily has a bad cold again, I want you to be sure and make arrange-ments to come at Christ-mass. I would not miss having you and Bertie with us on Christmas for anything. Edie isl ooking forward to it with so much pleasure. It will be all right, I will see that you have the money. Send me word how much expense you was to on the Chaise. Make your arrangement to stay several days. I want you and Bertie to have a good time, and once every year we will all try and get together. Send Edie\'s shoes along as soon as you can. George earned his title of \"Captain Hanscom\" by leading his local volunteer infantry company out of York County/Saco. His military connection runs even deeper through his wife’s family. George married Anna Deering, who was the daughter of a legendary Maine sea captain, Captain Joshua Deering. Together, George and Anna named their daughter Elizabeth Deering Hanscom to honor that seafaring heritage.
