Original September 3, 1885 Rand, McNally & Co. business letterhead, measuring approximately 8.5 x 11 inches.
An especially attractive early Rand McNally piece featuring a large, highly detailed illustrated masthead across the top. The design identifies Rand, McNally & Co., Printers & Publishers, 148–154 Monroe St., Chicago, and includes an engraved view of the company\'s substantial multi-story printing and publishing building with smoke rising from its chimney.
The typed letter is addressed to The Eagle & Phenix Manufacturing Co., Columbus, Georgia and concerns an order for maps. Rand McNally acknowledges the company\'s request for a large map of Georgia and a map of the United States, stating that they would prepare the large-scale map of Georgia and forward it within a few days.
The letter concludes with a handwritten Rand McNally & Co. signature/endorsement.
A desirable piece of 19th-century cartographic, publishing, printing and business history, with particularly strong display appeal from the ornate Rand McNally masthead and factory illustration. The direct reference to the preparation and sale of maps makes this considerably more interesting than routine company correspondence.
