1887 Antique United States Postal Card (1¢ Liberty Indicia / Scott #UX7)

Sent from Waterbury, Connecticut to Concord, Massachusetts

This is an original, late 19th-century piece of American postal and philatelic history. Mailed in the spring of 1887, this one-cent postal card features a handwritten mail-order request from an early stamp collector seeking a variety packet of postage stamps.

Item Details:
  • Sender: W. M. Hall, 128 East Main St., Waterbury, Conn.

  • Recipient: Thos. Buttrick (Thomas Buttrick), Concord, Mass.

  • Date Written: March 5, 1887

  • Postal Card Type: United States 1¢ Liberty "Banner" issue (designated by philatelists as Scott UX7).

  • Historical Content: Written in clear purple ink, the message documents early philatelic commerce in America:

"Please send one hundred all different stamps, and list, and oblige, W. M. Hall."

Condition & Visual References:
  • Front View Shows the address side of the card with the ornate "U.S. Postal Card" banner. The address is written to Concord, Mass., in beautiful purple ink. Features a very faint, almost entirely faded period postmark to the left of the Liberty indicia.

  • Back View Displays the complete handwritten message with a pre-printed "Waterbury, Conn.," location line, clearly dated March 5, 1887. The card shows clean margins, a neat pencil notation in the top-left corner ("ux7"), and natural age-toning. It remains remarkably crisp and well-preserved for a 139-year-old piece of historical paper.
