Three illustrations documenting Robert Edwin Peary — the United States Navy civil engineer who would go on to claim the discovery of the North Pole on April 6, 1909, eighteen years after this issue. In 1891 Peary was preparing for his first major Greenland expedition, which departed that summer — during which he crossed northern Greenland on dogsleds and proved it to be an island. This documentation of Peary at the outset of his Arctic career is a primary document of one of the great explorers of the age, published before he became world famous.
