This is an original 1894 photogravure from Sights and Scenes of the World, published by W.B. Conkey Company of Chicago. It features the Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano), one of the largest and most ornate Gothic cathedrals in Europe. The caption notes its vast marble construction, the thousands of statues adorning its exterior, and its centuries‑long building history from 1386 to 1809.
The marble was quarried near Lake Maggiore and transported by canal directly to the cathedral walls. The exterior is covered with a “forest” of pinnacles and spires, richly ornamented with statuary — over 4,500 statues on the outside alone. This plate is a strong example of historic Italian architecture, European travel imagery, and fine‑art photogravure printing from the late 19th century.
