Autograph letter signed by John Theodore Hewitt (1868–1954), chemist and later Fellow of the Royal Society, dated 5 September 1895, written from 11 Venner Road, Sydenham S.E.

Hewitt — then in the early phase of his scientific career after training under Sir William Ramsay at University College London — writes to a professional colleague asking whether there is “a vacancy in your works for a boy”, recommending two pupils for technical employment. He also comments on the progress of a “new laboratory”, noting that it will be “a great success” when finished.

This is a rare example of Hewitt’s early professional correspondence, reflecting the late‑Victorian expansion of chemical works, technical education, and school laboratories. The content aligns closely with Hewitt’s documented involvement in laboratory development and industrial chemistry during the 1890s.

John Theodore Hewitt FRS (1868–1954) was a British chemist trained at University College London under Sir William Ramsay, later studying at Leipzig. Active in London in the 1890s, he worked in chemical instruction, laboratory development, and industrial chemistry, publishing widely in organic and physical class=\"MsoNormal\">From a single owner collection of 3,000+ items.
