1902 Photo Ruch Mill Covered Bridge Flood Hereford Berks County PA Stamped:
$125.00

The photograph depicts a massive, timber-framed wooden covered bridge completely lifted off its stone abutments and collapsed flat into a shallow, rocky riverbed following a severe flood or winter ice freshet.

On the hill directly overlooking the destruction sits a classic Pennsylvania bank barn and homestead compound. The reverse side of the heavy cardboard mount features the authentic ink stamp of the local photographer/publisher: "Hereford, Berks Co., Pa."

Historical Background:

The geographical stamp explicitly places this scene within Hereford Township in southeastern Berks County. Local county records from May 1869 explicitly note the commissioning of a wooden covered bridge across a branch of the Perkiomen Creek near Rush's Mill (historically also known as Hunter's Mill / Rush's Mill). The creek layout, surrounding hillsides, and farm structures line up beautifully with this historic mill location.

Given the age of the photographic mounting style and the unique manner of destruction—where an entire covered roof structure is cleanly thrown into the waterbed intact—this image almost certainly documents the devastating effects of the Great Ice & Snow Freshet of February 1902. During this landmark storm, rising waters and immense sheets of breaking winter ice acted as slow-moving battering rams, pushing multiple historic covered bridges off their foundations throughout eastern Pennsylvania.

An exceptional piece for collectors of:

* Berks County, PA local history and genealogy

* Americana and antique covered bridge architecture

* Vintage disaster, flood, and weather event photography

🔍 Condition Notes

Condition: Pre-Owned / Antique Vintage

* The Photograph: In very good antique condition with strong contrast, clear details, and rich dark tones. There is some minor expected age silvering visible in the darker shadowed areas along the foreground when turned toward direct light.

* The Mat Board Mount: The dark grey textured mat board has suffered some wear over the last century. There is a noticeable horizontal crease/crack traveling through the bottom left-hand corner border (as pictured in detail), along with minor chipping and soft corners around the edges.

* The Backing: The reverse side shows light discoloration, edge wear, and a clean, fully legible geographic ink stamp reading "Hereford, Berks Co., Pa."
