Farmers\' Loan and Trust Company had operated from 16 William Street since the 19th century, managing estates, trusteeships, and securities for a client base that included some of New York\'s wealthiest families. By 1902 the firm counted railroad president Samuel Sloan among its directors, and his son, Samuel Sloan Jr., worked there as an officer handling day-to-day correspondence.
This card is routine correspondence, sent from Reading, Pennsylvania and addressed to Sloan by name and title. The company\'s clerk stamped it on arrival, logging it as inquiry No. 9284, received May 19, 1902, and marked it answered once a reply went out. A penciled note records the sender\'s name and hometown alongside a reference number, part of the bookkeeping that tracked thousands of small transactions.
Samuel Sloan Jr. would go on to marry into the Colt family and inherit his father\'s Garrison, New York estate. His own son later ran Bankers Trust and helped lead the Port Authority. Farmers\' Loan and Trust itself merged into National City Bank in 1929, a lineage running in an unbroken line to today\'s Citibank. This small inquiry card sits at the start of both trajectories.
