Original January 3, 1908 business letter on the striking illustrated/typographic letterhead of Lewis M. Swaab, 338 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, advertising himself as the “Largest Dealer in Motion Picture Machines and Films.” An excellent piece of very early American motion-picture and cinema history from the era when commercial movie exhibition was still developing.
The letterhead identifies Swaab as sole agent for Power’s Cameragraph and Edison’s Kinetoscopes. The typed letter was sent to Thomas W. Walker, 41 High Street, Willimantic, Connecticut, in response to his inquiry about equipment for operating a store show or Nickelodeon.
Particularly interesting content discusses the actual economics and equipment involved in opening an early movie theater. Swaab explains that Walker would only need to purchase the motion-picture machine and could rent the films, quoting rental rates of $20 per week for two changes or $25 per week for three changes. He also offers an Edison Universal machine fitted with fireproof attachments for an additional $20 over catalog price.
The letter further states that Swaab had sent catalogs and a bargain list of film reels, and notes that he conducted business directly from his Philadelphia office rather than through branches. Signed at the bottom in ink “L. M. Swaab.”
