Offered as a matched lot of two antique Christmas postcards illustrated by noted American artist Bernhardt Wall (1872–1956).
These wonderful early Christmas scenes depict children and families gathered around the fireplace at Christmastime. One shows a young child looking toward stockings hanging over the fireplace with the greeting “Merry Christmas.” The companion card depicts a mother and two children beside the fireplace with the greeting “For a merry Merry Christmas.”
The upper card bears Bernhardt Wall’s printed artist signature within the illustration. Both cards were published by the International Art Publishing Co., New York & Berlin, and the copyright markings appear to date the designs to 1909.
Both postcards have divided backs and period handwritten addressing to the same recipient in Fulton, Missouri, making them an especially appealing matched pair that has remained together.
Bernhardt Wall was one of the prolific illustrators of the Golden Age of postcards and produced thousands of postcard designs. His artist-signed holiday cards are collected today for both their subject matter and distinctive illustration style.
