Stephen Shannon Jewett (1858–1932) was a prominent New Hampshire attorney, judge, legislator, and legal reform figure based in Laconia, New Hampshire. Admitted to the New Hampshire bar in 1880, Jewett became an influential Republican political and legal leader, serving as Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives and later as president of the New Hampshire Bar Association in 1916.
Jewett was associated with major national legal organizations during the formative years of modern American jurisprudence, including the American Law Institute and the International Law Association. His papers reflect participation in early discussions surrounding the Restatements of American Law, legal codification, conflict of laws, contracts, torts, and international legal reform during the interwar period.
Documents from the Jewett archive contain correspondence and material connected to nationally significant legal figures including George W. Wickersham, Elihu Root, Benjamin N. Cardozo, William Draper Lewis, and Amos J. Peaslee. The archive provides insight into elite American legal networks and international law movements of the 1920s.
