Early-1900s black leather change purse with metal clasp, gilt-stamped in gold:
“TO W. H. PECKHAM FROM PEOPLES NATIONAL BANK, CLAY CENTER, KAN.”

Measures approx 5 × 7 inches. Moderate age wear and light cracking, some edge loss, clasp still functional. These embossed purses were typical personalized gifts from small-town banks to valued depositors or local merchants around 1905-1920.

The name W. H. Peckham refers to William Henry (“Will”) Peckham, proprietor of Peckham’s Grocery and son of early Clay Center settlers John C. and M. C. Peckham. The family’s roots run deep in Clay County, Kansas, with later generations—most notably Jacob Walter (“Jake”) Peckham and wife Paulyne E. (Newby) Peckham—relocating to Wichita, where descendants lived on Hillside Road and Poplar Street through mid-century.

This purse comes from the Peckham–Newby family estate, a multigenerational Kansas archive linking Clay Center’s pioneer-era business community to Wichita’s 20th-century growth. Additional Peckham and Newby family pieces from this estate will be offered separately.
