The firm’s specialty in turned wood and veneered luggage reflects Toledo’s reputation at the time as a hub for durable goods manufacturing and transportation-related industries.
The front of the card includes a preprinted remittance acknowledgment for received payments, intended to confirm full settlement of an account. This card was mailed to J.N. Abbey in East Liberty, PA, a neighborhood within Pittsburgh that was a thriving residential and commercial district in the early 1900s.
Duguid's business was part of a larger trend of specialty manufacturers in Toledo, which benefited from access to railroads and waterways for efficient product distribution.
