Wonderful original 1925–1926 school-day autograph and memory book belonging to JESSIE KING, filled with handwritten inscriptions, classmates' names, addresses, school memories, jokes, poems and personal reminiscences. Please see photographs for the book's size and overall dimensions, as no separate measurement was provided. The album retains its original dark flexible covers and cord-tied binding and is a particularly appealing piece of 1920s childhood, school and genealogical ephemera.
Jessie King's name is handwritten on the ownership page. The book contains printed sections including “My Teachers” and “Names and Addresses of my Class Mates,” followed by numerous handwritten entries from friends and classmates.
The entries provide an unusually rich collection of full names and residential addresses, making the album potentially useful to genealogists and researchers of the families represented. Names visible in the book include Margaret Hope, Ruth M. Glass, Ruth Bechtold, Margaret Walker, Margaret Evans, Earl B. Cox, and numerous others.
Several inscriptions help establish the period and location. Entries date primarily from 1925 and 1926, and one is specifically headed “May 4, 1926, La Junta, Colo.” Another inscription mentions “a birthday party and a sweetheart in the sixth grade,” placing Jessie within an elementary-school-age social circle at the time. A separate notation reads “Detroit Michigan 4/16/26,” suggesting an additional Michigan connection that may warrant further genealogical research.
The album goes well beyond simple signatures. Friends filled pages with affectionate messages, humorous verses, childhood recollections and references to shared experiences. One especially charming entry recalls Jessie as a longtime friend and mentions a gingham gown and calico clothing. Another lengthy reminiscence recalls several little girls going out with firecrackers and a pony, followed by an unfortunate mishap involving the pony—a vivid piece of personal childhood history.
Another classmate recalls school experiences and writes about their General Science class, while other entries mention teachers, school activities, friendships and youthful adventures. These personal narratives give the book considerably more historical character than an autograph album containing signatures alone.
The original decorative introductory page reads in part “Schoolday Memories bring back, Pleasant Thoughts of Happy Hours, Spent in Work and Play.”
Condition: Original used antique condition with age-related wear. Covers show rubbing, edge and corner wear, creasing/cracking and general handling wear. The original cord binding remains present, with wear/fraying to the cord. Interior paper has expected age toning, occasional marks and handling wear. Handwriting ranges from light pencil to darker ink but much remains readily legible. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition and content.
An excellent piece of 1920s Colorado school history, as well as a potentially productive genealogical research item because of the large number of named classmates, friends, street addresses and firsthand personal recollections associated with Jessie King and La Junta, Colorado.
