The vessel's name HAWAIIAN is clearly visible on the bow.
The handwritten period inscription on the reverse reads approximately:
"1929 - August -Kelso - Oregon -on Columbia River4th mate"
The photograph also bears a period "MT. TOM PHOTO CONTEST / HOLYOKE,MASS." stamp along with an additional photographer-related Springfield,Massachusetts stamp.
Research identifies SS Hawaiian as an American-Hawaiian SteamshipCompany ocean-going steam freighter built in 1919.
Government records describe Hawaiian as a 404.6-foot steel single-screwsteam freighter of 6,264 gross tons with extensive cargo-handling gear.
