Seaman, New York City’s purpose-built floating hospital for children and mothers, photographed underway in New York Harbor.Launched in 1935, Lloyd I. Seaman was operated by the Floating Hospital of St. John’s Guild. Each summer, she carried children from New York’s crowded neighborhoods and their mothers into the Lower Bay for fresh air, meals, recreation, medical examinations, nursing care, and health education.The program began in 1875, when poverty, overcrowded tenements, summer heat, infectious disease, and limited access to medical care placed many New York families at serious risk. Supported by voluntary contributions, the Floating Hospital served families without regard to nationality, religion, or race.Lloyd I. Seaman was constructed without engines and traveled through the harbor under tow. This reduced vibration, lowered the risk of fire, and provided more room for passengers and medical facilities. The period description on the reverse calls her “non-sinkable” and “fireproof” and records a licensed capacity of 1,575 people.The photograph captures the scale of the operation: children, mothers, and staff fill the windows and open decks. The Statue of Liberty appears faintly in the distance behind the stern, connecting the scene to New York Harbor and the immigrant communities served by the hospital.The vessel remained in service until 1973.
