Original 1940 North Star yearbook from North Tonawanda High School in North Tonawanda, New York.
A particularly striking pre-WWII yearbook with exceptional period graphic design throughout. The colorful illustrated divider pages feature bold geometric lettering, stylized figures and limited-color artwork strongly influenced by the Art Deco / Streamline Moderne commercial design of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Sections include Fine Arts, Classical Arts, Physical Arts, Commercial & Industrial Arts, Classes, Seniors and Advertisements.
Includes senior portraits and names, classroom scenes, clubs, band, swing orchestra, dramatic club, football, basketball, swimming and other school activities. The swimming section features the boys' team in period one-piece swimming uniforms and notes that North Tonawanda won the 1940 Western New York Swimming League championship.
Also includes wonderful glimpses of everyday 1940 life, including Home Economics students working with a vintage sewing machine and pages of local North Tonawanda and Buffalo-area advertising. One ad announces the May 30, 1940 grand opening of Crystal Beach with its regular boat schedule and fireworks at night.
A few handwritten autographs/signatures are scattered throughout.
