1944 WWII South Pacific Soldier Love Letter MISERABLE LIFE Army Censored APO 25:
$49.97

A particularly poignant letter from this ongoing wartime correspondence. Johnny writes at length about his love for Jo and the future he imagines for them after the war. He calls her his “future ever loving wife,” discusses the importance of understanding one another and working through disagreements, and writes of wanting her companionship to make his future life happy.

He also describes his present circumstances, writing that he is still on the same island “sweating out this life of a soldier which is so miserable to me.” He mentions eating fresh foods including meat, eggs and vegetables while still having beer and Coca-Cola rations, asks about a cigarette lighter and beads he previously sent, requests writing material, and says he continues attending Mass and evening services.

Near the end, Johnny asks Jo to continue offering prayers for him so that he can someday “get back to a civilian once more and start that life with two.”

Historical context: This letter is part of a larger surviving correspondence between Johnny and Josephine. Later material in the correspondence indicates that Johnny did not survive the war, making his hopeful discussion here of marriage and their future together especially poignant.

Vintage condition with expected age toning, folds and handling wear. Please review photographs for condition and content.

Part of a larger WWII correspondence group. Additional letters from this correspondence may be available separately.
