Beautiful 19th century American salt glazed stoneware pitcher featuring cobalt blue decoration and an embossed bird medallion.The central raised medallion depicts two birds perched on a branch. Additional details include a textured body, raised scrolling ornament, rope-style bands, curved applied handle and pouring spout.The creamy gray stoneware is accented with wonderfully varied cobalt blue glazing, giving the pitcher the distinctive character associated with early utilitarian stoneware.PROVENANCE:
This piece comes from my longtime family collection of primitive American antiques and was most likely purchased by my grandmother in Virginia. Maker and exact place of manufacture are unknown.CONDITION:
