19th century, possibly Italian or Spanish Colonial polychrome and parcel-gilt tabernacle box or home altar.Featuring an architectural design with a vaulted shrine supported by columns and a gilded, sunburst-style back panel.The piece is made from hardwood and softwood, polychrome decorated parcel gilt, colored in red and teal, and embellished with faux marble and gilded accents. The sides and the top with have Roman style paintings,The altar is raised on flattened bun feet.The top pediment includes a painted face, possibly representing Dionysus or a similar figure, surrounded by grapevines.
