A pair of Regency Coalport Spill Vases featuring a tapered body decorated with meticulously hand-painted polychrome botanical arrangements flanked by peach colored bands with cobalt blue and gilt decoration and ending in a spread foot. An elaborate gilt scrollwork borders and twin bands of raised beaded (or pearl) molding frame the polychrome panels.
Commonly known as "spill vases," these trumpet shaped vases were made in the early 1800s to hold thin wooden spills (tapers) used to light candles, oil lamps, or coal fires from a hearth. Once matches became available and widely used, this type of vase was no longer made.
The vases measure approximately 5 inches tall, have a 3.75 inch diameter opening and a 2.5 inch diameter foot. Unmarked to base except for “297” which could be the pattern number or a painter’s/guilder’s mark. Many original Coalport pieces from this period were completely unmarked or only featured a faint painted pattern number on the bottom, which is typical for the manufacturer before their later stamped hallmarks became standard practice.
Wear appropriate for age, mostly to gilding although there are a few instances of scratches to polychrome enamel. Once vase has two chips to underside of foot, both partially or wholly covered in glaze suggesting that they could be original to the piece. The other vase has a chip to upper rim of foot, a puddle of glaze to top lip, and a professionally restored lip. All of these observations are shown in photos.
