Wonderful group of three original antique Montana photographs, including an impressive cabinet portrait produced by the historic Elite Studio of Butte, Montana.
The large cabinet photograph is marked:
Elite Studio – Extra Finish
Butte, Mont.
Cor. Park & Main St., Over State Savings Bank
The reverse further identifies the studio as:
Brennan & Palmer, Proprietors
Negatives Preserved for Future Orders
Elite Studio and photographer Lydia L. Brennan are documented as operating in Butte during the 1890s, making this an excellent surviving piece of early Montana photographic history.
Also included is an oval portrait of an older gentleman. On the reverse is an old handwritten notation that appears to read:
“Pope Catlin?”
Pope Catlin (1839–1925) was a documented Montana pioneer and early resident of western Montana. The identity of the gentleman in this photograph has NOT been authenticated, and the photograph is being sold only with the historical handwritten attribution found on its reverse.
The third photograph is included as part of the same antique Montana group.
