Original photo is an authentic piece of Los Angeles & Hollywood history. This 5 x 7 captures the official Los Angeles 205th Birthday Celebration on September 4 1986. It shows a striking close-up of famous actor and cultural icon, Iron Eyes Cody in ceremonial regalia. He is holding the piece of cake that can be assumed he\'d just made the first cut into moments before from the giant cake. This party happened on historic Olvera Street, famous for its connection to LA\'s beginnings.
As significantly important is that it was captured, signed and annotated by Los Angeles photojournalist and street photographer, Gary Leonard. Since the 1970\'s, he\'s spent more than 50 years capturing community milestones, street scenes and every day people. His archive of photos givesn extraordinary record of all things Los Angeles. He has major works in museums, including the Special Collection at the Los Angeles Public Library.
Provenance: In pen, Gary Leonard hand-wrote his signature and annotation. In the lower right corner \"Photo x Gary Leonard\" and in the white margin at the top of the photo (only a small part of which can be seen in the frame) he continued by writing \"Downtown L.A., CA. Olvera Street, 9-4-86 205th Birthday Iron Eyes Cody.\" On the back of the paper insert under the backing he also wrote \"Iron Eyes.
Under glass, a sturdy, solid wood frame in a light grain finish has protected the photo for the many years it\'s been in storage. A machine-cut geometric pattern gives this frame a distinctive western look. The country of origin tag, \"Made in Thailand\" is intact on the back. It includes a built-in easel stand and wall-hanging loops.
The body of the photo is in excellent condition with very small wear on the corners. The wood frame has a some nicks and dings (see photos). Backing board is fully intact.
Did you know that Iron Eyes Cody was born Espera Oscar de Corti in Louisiana to immigrant parents from Sicily, Italy?? Even though he became an imposter, throughout his lifetime as Iron Eyes, he claimed he had a Cherokee father and a Cree mother, even sometimes saying he was raised on an Oklahoma reservation.
