Historically important and fascinating group of six original Columbia College event cards advertising commencement and class day ceremonies that occurred between 1863 and 1870. They predate the official renaming of the college to Columbia University in 1896 by more than twenty-five years! The 1867 Class Day card is signed on back “Compliments of Willard Bartlett.” Willard Bartlett (1846-1925) had a distinguished career as an American jurist and justice of the New York Supreme Court. He served on the New York Court of Appeals from 1908 to 1916 and was elected as its Chief Judge from 1914 to 1916. Willard graduated from Columbia College in 1869, having already been admitted to the New York Bar in 1868. The 1863 commencement card contains an inspiring Latin phrase, “Terminus et Limen” (“the boundary and the threshold” or “the ending and the beginning”), on the shield carried by a soldier in armor.
Five cards are finely engraved with expressive typefaces and classical iconography relating to the arts and sciences. They were executed by New York City printer “Cochran”, likely American engraver William J. Cochran who operated his printing establishment at 539 and 895 Broadway. The unmarked sixth card was likely created by Cochran also.
Very good condition. The Philolexian Society anniversary card is trimmed at bottom. Smallest card measures approximately 2-3/4 inches high x 4-3/8 inches wide.
