A Portfolio Six Frigates of The American Sailing Navy Rendered by Melbourne Smith for the United States Naval Institute Rare collection of 6 Lithographs, complete with a history of each ship, framing mats included. All housed in a large blue portfolio. SIZE: 11" x 15" inside, outside 18" x 21-1/2"CONDITION: Yellowing edges on Lithographs and their mats as well as framing wear on the prints itself. Wear such as folding and staining on portfolio envelope. Contents all original and appear to be complete. One of the print mats has a tear and one of the prints has a small tear on the side (see photos for condition). These lithographs depict illustrations or images related to naval ships or naval operations. Authorized by the Naval Act of 1794 to combat Mediterranean piracy and European threats, the original six frigates of the United States Navy - United States, Constellation, Constitution, Chesapeake, Congress, and President: - USS United States (44 guns): Launched May 10, 1797, in Philadelphia.
- USS Constellation (38 guns): Launched September 7, 1797, in Baltimore.
- USS Constitution (44 guns): Launched October 21, 1797, in Boston; currently the oldest commissioned warship afloat.
- USS Congress (38 guns): Launched August 15, 1799, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
- USS Chesapeake (38 guns): Launched December 2, 1799, in Gosport, Virginia.
- USS President (44 guns): Launched April 10, 1800, in New York.
