The slides reproduce a varied group of album leaves and fan-format paintings depicting birds perched on flowering branches, blossoms, plants, figures, garden scenes, and detailed landscapes. Several compositions feature isolated subjects against open backgrounds, while others show more elaborate narrative scenes with people, architecture, trees, and natural settings.
Chen Hongshou was a major late Ming dynasty painter celebrated for his distinctive linear style, expressive figures, unusual proportions, refined color, and imaginative interpretations of traditional Chinese subjects. His work included figure painting, landscapes, bird-and-flower imagery, book illustration, fans, and album leaves.
These slides provide useful visual references for the study of late Ming painting, Chinese fan art, album-leaf composition, bird-and-flower painting, narrative figures, garden imagery, and seventeenth-century East Asian art.
