This is one of the southern islands of the Philippine group. Manila, on the island of Luzon, is off at the north,—a little to the left of the direction in which you are facing. Just beyond that beautiful, feathery clump of bamboos is a wharf where these vessels from Hong Kong or various European ports have come to load and unload. Hemp is the most important export here. This curiously primitive contrivance is not any temporary makeshift—it is the customary form of saw-mill by which lumber is prepared for use of native houses and furniture. The timber is sawed at an angle with the ground as these men have arranged it, then the saw in its oblong frame is pulled alternately up and down. Two men go to work with each saw; as you see them now, one makes a single muscular Filipino furnisher. Labor is pitifully cheap; there is actually no great economic incentive to put European or American machinery in the place of a clumsy device like this. The cart which you see coming up with a load from the beach has two thick, heavy wooden wheels supporting a frame of bamboo on which the load rests.

Condition:
Light general wear consistent with age, including slight edge and corner rubbing and minor surface handling marks. No major damage; images remain clear and well preserved.
