ANTIQUE 150 YEAR OLDPATENT & UNIQUE BRACES
Here are 4 antique bracesabout 150 years old. It is an instant collection of patent and unique braces. Ican tell a little about them, from left to right in first photo.
1 1.Miller Falls brace with theBarbers Improved Patent shell chuck with no ratcheting. Stamped on lower arm –BARBERS IMPD. No. 1 - Has Lignum Vitae head which someone inserted a Winchestermedallion on the top which was not original. The center grip is rosewood Rose pattern center handle with brasstapered caps. Done on these early braces probably 1860’s. Very nicely done as was done on MF Rosepatent braces. Good condition.
2 2. Streeter patent brace - I can see on upper arm 2 patent dates. One forMarch 31, 1857 which looks like a folding version of this brace. Also patentfor January 8, 1867 for the unique spring chuck design. Thepatent describes the collar constricting the moving jaws, to center and gripthe bit. It was patented on Mar. 31, 1857 as patent number 16,938 and onJanuary 8, 1867, patent number 61,113. Abel W. Streeter manufactured these inShelburne Falls MA.The swell in iron for center grip and cast ironhead like some early Taylor patent braces. Good working condition. A rare patent brace.
3 3. Backus brace with 1865 patent by Draper. QuimbyS. Backus manufactured this unique bit brace utilizing anadaptation of a chuck originally patented by William W. Draper. Lignum vitae head and rosewoodcenter grip. This one is nickel plated and the patented chuck is in goodworking condition. It has some damage to the ratchet and I can’t get it tomove. Good for restoring, parts or a patent collection.
4 4. John Chantrell 1883 patent brace. It has a specialized chuckmechanisms where jaws fit into slots in a follower to tightly secure square-taperedauger bits. The chuck and jaws are in fine working condition. It also has alignum vitae head and rosewood center grip. It has the 1883 patent ratchetmechanism but I cannot get it to work. A brace for restoring, parts or a patentcollection.
