During the mid-1800s through the end of the 19th century, glassblowers refined the art of making cranberry glass (or \"gold ruby\" glass as it is known in Europe) to create everything from vases and pitchers to decanters with matching tumblers. Cranberry glass does indeed use gold chloride in its manufacturing process. The amount of gold chloride used intensifies the red color.
Meanwhile, advancements in electricity were progressing. In1879, Thomas Edison created a light bulb with a carbonized cotton thread filament that lasted for 14.5 hours. The following year, he patented his improved incandescent light bulb and developed a complete electric lighting system. During the1880s, Edison\'s incandescent bulbs were used for indoor lighting.

Offered here is a beautiful late 1800s cranberry and clear glass lamp base. This is NOT a converted oil lamp - it was specifically made to be an electric lamp, as evidenced by the tunnel in the footer to allow a cord to pass through there. (See photo). When angled toward light, you can see a beautiful subtle gold shimmer from the gold chloride in the glass. The upper clear glass part (located immediately under the socket) has tiny holes with thin wire hooks going all the way around, which can be used to hang prisms.
Measuring up to the top of the socket, stands about 8\" tall. Footprint measures about 4 7/8\" in diameter.
No chips, cracks, or unusual wear on any part of this piece. Absolutely lovely.
