Up for sale is this beautifully decorated early-to-mid 20th-century Japanese cigarette case featuring an elaboratepeacock among flowering branches, executed in fine gold- and silver-colored damascene work against a deep blackened metal ground.
The reverse is simpler, decorated withtwo small birds in flight.
The case is executed in the Japanesedamascene / zōgan tradition, a decorative metalworking technique in which contrasting metals are applied to or worked into a prepared dark metal surface. Pieces of this type were produced in Japan during the early-to-mid 20th century, often for the export market.
The interior retains its dark finish, hinged construction, metal edging, andtwo woven cigarette-retaining elastic straps.
There isno K24 mark or visible maker’s mark.
Condition:Good vintage condition with age-related surface wear, rubbing, and some wear to the metal edging and blackened finish. The main peacock decoration remains strong, detailed, and highly decorative. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
