This is a used single entry 1940 ledger book from the old WM McGill general store and cafe in Pachuta, MS. These are daily entries of sales and I assume store and cafe credit entries. There are also a few random pieces of notes papers and envelopes that have been tucked away in between the pages for years. There are also random doodles from store clerks that a bit of charm. This is a very nice time capsule of history. Great for history and ephemera collectors as well as junk journal creators. It’s a fascinating look into activities and cost of goods from an era gone by!

The Location: Pachuta, Mississippi (located in Clarke County). In the mid-20th century, Pachuta was a tight-knit railroad and farming community.
The Proprietors: The store was owned and operated by Willie James McGill and his wife, Elsie Walters McGill. They were iconic figures in the town, remembered explicitly by locals as "kind and gracious proprietors" who anchored the community. Their daughter, Joyce McGill (born in Pachuta in 1931), also grew up working in the business.
The Nature of the Business: The W.M. McGill property was a multi-use mainstay. It operated simultaneously as a Country Store (selling general merchandise, farming dry goods, and everyday staples) and a Cafe (which served as a social gathering hub where locals traded news over coffee and home-cooked meals).
Significance of the Building: The building still stands today in Pachuta. It is a wonderfully preserved, classic Southern frame-built country store featuring a distinct, long, raised concrete front porch that originally functioned as a loading dock for wagons and supply trucks.
