The Douglas DC-8 is an early long range, narrow body airliner. It was a four-engine low wing aircraft powered by Pratt and Whitney JT3C Turbojets. The model was 151 feet long with a maximum takeoff weight of 273,000 pounds. The model had its first flight on 30 May 1958. It was introduced into service on 18 September 1959 with Delta Airlines and United Airlines. There were a total 556 models manufactured between 1958-1972.
The improved Series 60 was introduced in April of 1965. The DC-8-61 fuselage was stretched by 36 feet, enabling between 180-220 passengers in a mixed class configuration. The model was powered by the improved Pratt and Whitney JT3D engines. The maximum takeoff weight was increased to 325,000 pounds. The model entered service in February of 1967 with United Airlines.
PLUNA Lineas Aereas Uruguayas S.A Airlines was the flag carrier of Uruguay. It was founded and commenced operations in 1936. PLUNA was an acronym for Primeras Lineas Uruguayas de Navegacion Aerea. The English translation is First Uruguayan Air Navigation Lines. The airline became a wholly Uruguayan Government owned company in 1951. In July of 2012, due to financial difficulties, the Uruguayan Government decided to close the airline down and liquidate its assets.
This particular aircraft (5N-HAS) has had an impressive career. It was first delivered to Eastern Airlines on 09 December 1967 with registration N8771. It went through ten more owners from 1967 to 1991 before it was purchased by PLUNA in November of 1991 with registration 5N-HAS. It only flew with PLUNA for under one year before it was sold to Aero Peru. In December of 1993 it was sold to Buffalo Airways with a new registration N914BV and provided freight service until the end of its service life and was ultimately scrapped (how very sad).
